Congratulations, you’ve said yes to your dress - but spoiler alert, the fun doesn’t stop there! While you may have your dress style and size selected, you’ll still need to schedule at least one dress fitting to make sure your dress is fit specifically to your body.

Here’s our guide for making sure your dress fitting process is a seamless experience!

When should I have my dress fitting(s)?
Your first dress fitting should be 6 - 8 weeks prior to your wedding day. This way, you’ll have plenty of time to make any necessary alterations and schedule additional appointments.

Wait, appointments? Plural? Yes. It’s actually quite common for brides to have up to three (or more) fittings based on how many alterations they need, how much weight they’re trying to lose and even how nervous the bride is to make sure everything is perfect!

What should I bring with me?
You should absolutely have the shoes you plan to wear on your big day. If you don’t have these yet, reschedule the appointment - trust us. Is a perfectly hemmed dress that big of a deal? It is if it’s too long and you’re tripping down the isle! Along with that, you should also wear the exact undergarments to ensure the best fit. Choose a color as close to your skin tone as possible!

Other than that, a pen and paper (or the notes section of your mobile device) will also come in handy. Be sure to write down all changes that you need and share this list with the salesperson or store owner. Once you know how long these alterations will take, schedule your next fitting to get a better idea of how your dress will actually look on your wedding day.

Another pro tip: Bring the person (or people) who will be helping you get into the dress. Depending on how complicated it is, they may need a how-to tutorial!

Any other pro tips?

  • Remember to set budget aside for alterations from the beginning! This extra cost could sneak up on you if you don’t plan ahead.
  • Don’t forget to sit down! Sounds silly, but while most of your day will be spent standing, walking and dancing - you’ll still need to sit for meals. Make sure you sit and move around in the gown to see if anything is uncomfortable.
  • Purchase a gown in a larger size than a smaller size. It’s always easier to make a gown smaller than it is to make a gown larger!
  • Check over all details during your fittings. Don’t be afraid to point out any imperfections - missing beading, pulling, etc. - after all, you’ll want your gown to be flawless!
