New York City Village Halloween Parade 2018: Pro Guide

When the streets of Manhattan are filled with vampires, witches, and ghosts, it’s evident that the annual Village Halloween Parade has arrived! Whether you’ve attended this legendary event every year or plan on showing up for the very first time, there are a variety of incredible sights to see! If you’re looking for a “cheat sheet” for this year’s parade, then here’s what you need to know:

Overview
This year, the legendary Village Halloween Parade will be celebrating its 45th Anniversary in style! The parade will be held on Wednesday, October 31, 2018, on Halloween and will start sharply at 7pm.

The parade will span the entire length of 6th Ave. (Spring to 16th Street) and it’s highly recommended that you take a subway to the event — since there will be no parking in sight. For specific subway instructions and which lines to take, the parade’s official website breaks it down in full detail!

Theme
If you’re not sure what to go as this year, then the parade suggests you dress up as (drum roll, please) a robot! That’s correct: each year, the committee sets a theme that attendees can follow — but definitely encourage every guest to wear whatever costume they desire!

The inspiration behind this year’s theme is loosely based on Mary Shelley’s legendary book Frankenstein. Since the novel will be celebrating it’s 200th anniversary this year, the committee wanted to take the subject of human vs. monster into a new direction: robots. So, whether you plan on dressing up as R2D2 from Star Wars or Johnny 5 from Short Circut, the possibilities are endless!

Pro Tips
Just like the annual Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, the annual Village Halloween Parade can be quite overwhelming — since there will definitely be a crowd. If you’re planning on attending for the first time, then here are some tips to consider:
  • Don’t be late: Give yourself enough time to commute to the parade route.
  • Stay in a group: Since it will be crowded, it’s essential that if you go as a group to stay as a group — since it will be simple to get split up.
  • Bring water: As you guessed, since the sidewalks will be packed, it may be difficult to find a food cart or store to purchase some water. Therefore, it’s essential to bring your own!
  • Have fun: This is one of the most significant, most legendary events in New York City — plus, it’s Halloween! Have a grand time watching this wonderful parade!
