Wacky Wedding Facts, Traditions, and Superstitions

Weddings have a long, long history behind them. After all, they’ve been taking place since 3,000 BC — that’s over 5,000 years of saying “I do!” After all this time, many traditions and superstitions have been born. Read on for a list of the most interesting facts we could find.

Good Luck
  • You may have heard that rain on your wedding day means good luck — but did you know that the English believe it’s actually finding a spider in your wedding dress!?
  • In addition, English traditions say that Wednesday is the best day of the week to get married, while Monday is for wealth, and Tuesday is for health.
  • Egyptians actually pinch the bride for good luck on her wedding day.
  • The Greeks believe that if a bride tucks a sugar cube in her glove on the big day, it will sweeten her marriage for years to come.
  • The superstition behind carrying the bride over the threshold on her wedding night is to protect her from evil spirits.

Bad Luck
  • Contrary to Americans, the English actually believe that Saturday is the unluckiest day of the week to say “I do.”
  • The Romans believed that getting married in May was very bad luck. This is because they held their festival for the dead during that month. There is even a children's nursery rhyme that goes, “marry in the month of May, and you'll surely rue the day."
  • Steer clear of yellow roses in your bouquet and at your reception. They are thought to symbolize jealousy.
  • This extremely dramatic superstition says that if someone drops one of the rings during the wedding ceremony, they’ll die.

The Rings
  • Many believe that De Beers popularized the diamond engagement ring in 1938 — however, they actually first became a trend in the late 1400’s.
  • Ever wonder why the “ring finger” is considered the fourth finger of your left hand? This is because it was widely believed that the vein in that finger leads directly to your heart.
  • Non-Traditional engagement rings continue to grow in popularity, but don’t go for a pearl stone! They are believed to represent tears.
  • The aquamarine is said to represent marital bliss and ensure a harmonious marriage.

Dynasty Limousine’s 2017 Broadway Roundup

The 2017 Tony Award nominees were announced yesterday during a live webcast from The New York Public Library for the Performing Arts at Lincoln Center. Which nominee for Best Musical do you think is the front-runner? Read on for a full list of nominees:

  • “Come From Away”: “Come From Away” details the selfless hospitality provided by the residents of Newfoundland, Canada, following the morning of September 11, 2001. Residents provided asylum to 6,700 passengers whose flights were diverted in the wake of the 9/11 terror attacks on New York City. This musical is free of political satire and reminds the audience of a time when the nation stood united as one. A welcome sentiment in today’s harsh political climate.
  • “Dear Evan Hansen”: Are you a fan of the Netflix Original, 13 Reasons Why? Then you’re sure to be mesmerized by “Dear Evan Hansen.” This angsty musical follows the lives of high school students dealing with the death of their classmate — a boy who was considered to be the “class freak.” The beautiful songs touch on loss, grief, self-delusion, and finding your tribe among other things.
  • “Groundhog Day”: Bill Murray must be so proud! “Groundhog Day” is a musical adaptation of the 1993 film of the same name. Irritable city weatherman Phil Conners is stuck in small-town America, forced to relive the same monotonous day, over and over again —  until he meets Rita Hanson!

Do you think anyone was left off the list for Best Musical? We’d love to hear from you on our Facebook page! A complete list of nominations in all categories can be found at TonyAwards.com.

Memorial Day Weekend 2016 Travel Tips

Long Island's Premiere Limousine Service
P: (631) 587-8500

Heading out of town this weekend? You won’t be alone.

Last year, AAA projected 37 million Americans were traveling during Memorial Day Weekend. This year? 38 million are expected to take to the skies and highways due to record low gas prices and airfare.

So what’s a traveler to do?
  • Sign up for alerts - Whether through social media or smartphone apps, sign up for travel alerts to stay in the know. Keep an eye on the news for road delays and check your apps for gate changes at airports.
  • Leave EXTRA early - Roads and airports will likely be mobbed, so be proactive and leave with plenty of time to get to your destination. Plus, with the recent TSA issues - you may want to arrive an hour or two earlier than usual if you’re flying.
  • Check your vehicle - For those of you hitting the roads, make sure your car is in tip top shape prior to departure. That means checking your battery, tires, and oil. Having a roadside emergency kit on hand may also be the difference of getting back on the road soon, or being stuck where you are for some time.
If you’re heading to the airport this weekend avoid road rage, parking fees, and navigation responsibilities - turn to Dynasty Limousine. We’re available for all your airport drop off and pick up needs, to ensure your weekend is hassle free. Give us a call to request a quote - our offices are open 24 hours for your convenience.

Wine Tasting Theme Parties

Long Island's Premiere Limousine Service
P: (631) 587-8500

Call over all of your friends and pop open the bottles! Whether you’re an experienced sommelier, or a first time sipper, a wine tasting party is both a social and educational way to experience new types of vino.

Planning your next fête? Here are some tasting themes you must try!
Blind Wine Tasting. Serve up some excitement by pouring your guests different wines with the labels covered, and let the guessing begin! Much of our judgement of wines is influenced by the region, knowledge of the producer and even the price. A blind wine tasting party allows you to asses the quality of the wines without being biased.

Wine Scoring Party. Wine scoring parties allow the tasters to share their opinions and spark a conversation about wines in a comfortable environment. Score cards are handed out, where guests rank the wines in different categories like appearance, aroma, body, taste and finish.

Wine Tasting By Region. Transport yourself to the French countryside (or your exotic destination of choice)! Really explore your wine region of choice by pairing the wines with local foods and decor from that area. Comparing different wines from the same region is an interesting way to see how their styles differ.

Vertical Wine Tasting. A vertical wine tasting party pairs several of the same wines, from the same producer or vineyard, across several different vintages. This type of tasting is helpful in getting a feel for a particular winery’s composition, and shows you how weather patterns may affect the taste of the wines over the years.

Horizontal Wine Tasting. A horizontal wine tasting provides insight into the characteristics that are unique to a specific vintage. These wines can be from the same wine region or from different regions around the world. Trying out all different wines from the same year, is a great way to determine what styles of wine you typically prefer.

Want to sip with your friends without the hassle? Forego hosting a party and join us for a trip to the vineyards. Call us today and we’ll set up a fully customizable wine tour for your next outing. We provide our customers with luxurious limousines and/or limo buses which can accommodate a party of 2 to 30 guests to the East End of Long Island for a day of relaxation and fun. Trending News: Will LI Wine Tours as We Know Them Soon Come to an End?

Long Island's Premiere Limousine Service
P: (631) 587-8500

It goes without saying that wine tours are a popular Long Island outing - but latest news from the East End explains the nature of a day at the vineyard may soon change.

Members of the Long Island Wine Council announced in Tuesday’s Southold Town Board work session that they are working to shift the focus of the North Fork wine business away from the party centric, live music atmosphere and toward the quality of wines grown. Meaning? Goodbye party bus crowds and hello wine connoisseurs.

According to the East End Beacon:
“One of the biggest problems is music is not profitable,” said Long Island Wine Council Executive Director Steve Bate. “You have people sitting around for a whole afternoon sipping one glass of wine to listen to music, and they’re not actually taking the wine home with them.”
“We want to go after a different customer, one that is more interested in the product than in live music,” said Mr. Bate.

The Wine Council has begun a complete overhaul of the region’s branding strategies, creating a new website to focus on what goes into the making of award-winning North Fork wines and their winemakers. Wineries will also undergo a two-day training to help them redefine how wine is sold, pour no more than an ounce, and set a minimum standard for purchases when people spend all day at a tasting room.
“Customers should expect to invest when they come out here, not be looking for a deal. We want to make sure tasting room fees are not waived unless there is a significant investment.”
Read even more details here via Patch. What are your thoughts about this new initiative? Share your views on our Facebook page.

Given this will take time to see the shift take place, it’s certainly something to consider when heading to the wineries in the future. In the interim, connect with our expert wine tour representatives to create the perfect Vineyard Tour Package to suit your needs. Best Places to See Comedy in NYC

Long Island's Premiere Limousine Service
P: (631) 587-8500

New York City is arguably the comedy capital of the world. From stand-up performances in arenas that seat thousands to improv shows in small underground spots, there’s no shortage of comedy, seven nights a week.

Here are some of the best venues in NYC that are worth that two drink minimum.
Photo via The GirlsNY

Carolines - 1626 Broadway
An institution in the comedy scene for the past 30 years, Carolines has established itself as a leading destination for live entertainment by continuously presenting headliners and introducing new talent. Jerry Seinfeld, Jon Stewart and Jay Leno can credit Carolines with giving them their start in comedy. Home of the successful New York Comedy Festival, Carolines is the place to be to see some of the biggest (and funniest!) names in showbiz.

Upright Citizens Brigade Theatre - 307 W. 26th St. (Chelsea location)/153 East 3rd St. (East Village location)
While stand-up comedy is the traditional form that New Yorkers are used to, UCB is best known for improv and sketch. Started by Saturday Night Live alum, Amy Poehler and her funny friends, UCB theatre is the most intimate and gritty way to see big names and rising stars, up close and personal. At any given point, expect for a super famous star to pop into the underground theatre and hop on stage. The shows are cheap but the laughs are big!

Gotham Comedy Club - 208 West 23rd St.
You may already recognize the Gotham stage background from appearing in various television shows and movies. Since it’s doors opened in 1996, Gotham quickly made a name for itself, bringing big acts like Dave Chapelle, Lewis Black and Colin Quinn to the stage. This is one of the best places to see a show, as it’s swanky, yet intimate ambiance, provides the audience with the feel of being at a Broadway show.

Comedy Cellar - 130 West 3rd St.
Known as the comic’s club, the Comedy Cellar is a no-frills venue where comedians come to try out their new material. On any given night you might expect to see Dave Attell or Jim Norton hitting the stage to work out a new routine. Louis C.K. counts this club as his go-to spot, both in real life and on his hit show, Louie. If you’re planning on hitting this Greenwich Village hot spot on the weekends, don’t forget to make a reservation-- shows sell out quickly!

Before you get your laugh on, why not make a night of it? Plan some dinner and drinks prior to the show and let Dynasty Limo take care of your transportation needs. For information on availability or to make a reservation, contact us at 631-587-8500.
