8.5 million lights, 15 miles of garlands, 1,300 individually decorated Christmas trees - the holidays aren’t just a celebration at Walt Disney World, they’re an epic production. If you’re heading down south for a little bit of Disney Christmas magic this season, we wanted to provide some tips from Travel + Leisure to help you strategize your venture in advance:
Arrive Early - The week between Christmas and New Years is prime time for tourist travel, not surprising since the kids are out of school and you have vacation days to use up. During this peak time, it’s not uncommon for Disney’s Magic Kingdom to reach capacity by late morning. Last year, management closed the entry gates on December 31st until hordes started to disperse in the late afternoon. So if you have your heart set on a park, be sure to get there at least an hour before it opens!
Book Meal Reservations Ahead of Time - While this isn’t new, booking advance dining reservations is crucial. Plus as a bonus, if you have a reservation in a theme park that’s nearing capacity and guests are being refused entry - you’ll be more likely to get inside. Head to the Biergarten in Epcot’s Germany pavilion for a festive meal with a special holiday buffet and Christmas market.
Focus on Epcot and Animal Kingdom - Magic Kingdom is Disney’s most popular park attracting an estimated 18.5 million visits last year alone. With the crowds that flock there, it could take you an hour to simply get from one end of the park to the other. No amounts of holiday cheer can withstand those circumstances. This time, try your hand visiting Epcot and/or Disney’s Animal Kingdom. Both are more spacious, so you will feel less crammed in there!
Plan Ahead - BYO-Stroller. Disney of course provides these for rentals, they do sell out quickly. Plan ahead and bring anything you can as to opt out of anything that requires you to stand in line for the service (stroller rentals, Fastpass rescheduling, etc).
It’s also important to adjust your expectations, with gridlock this thick you likely won’t get to do everything you had wanted but that shouldn’t hinder your celebration! For additional Disney travel tips, click here »
