One of the most celebrated symbols of holiday cheer - the 82nd annual Rockefeller Christmas Tree Lighting! This year’s 85 foot tall tree will be lit with 45,000 energy efficient LED lights in front of tens of thousands who crowd NYC’s streets, in addition to the millions who will tune in live around the globe. The tree will be lit on Wednesday, December 3rd and remain lit and can be viewed until 8pm on January 7th, 2015.

Radio City Christmas Spectacular

Yes, it’s already that time of year - the holiday season is upon us. As usual, Long Island has a plethora of things in store:

Jones Beach Holiday Lights Spectacular- Returning after going dark for seven years due to budget cuts, the Jones Beach Holiday Lights Spectacular is BACK! Starting November 20th, people can drive through 2.5 miles of lighting attractions, enjoy a Holiday Village with local school choir performance, holiday music, and refreshments, a Hay Maze, and photos with Santa. Hours are nightfall to 10pm Monday-Thursday, and nightfall to 11pm Friday-Sunday. Admission is $20 per vehicle and $25 on weekends. 

Holiday STYLE Festival and Tree Lighting - FREE to the public, the Tanger Outlets in Deer Park invites the community to attend their annual Holiday STYLE Festival and Christmas Tree Lighting on Saturday, November 22nd from 3-6pm. The day will consist of music and ice skating performances, along with a special concert with Jesse McCartney and a tree lighting with the help of the Rockettes. Ice rink opens to the public at 6:30pm!  

28th Annual The Nutcracker Ballet - This holiday classic adds a narrated score to make it perfect for even the youngest of audience members. A cast of professionals from across the USA are joined by aspiring young dancers from Long Island and NYC. Long Island Ballet Theatre (LIBT) is proud to be presenting its 14th season at the Jeanne Rimsky Theater at Landmark on Main Street in Port Washington. Long Island Christmas Tree - This year’s Christmas Tree on display at the Rex Corp. Plaza Skating Rink in Uniondale will feature for the first time, a tree from Long Island! This year’s tree, weighing in at 10,000 pounds, is a 70 foot tall Norway spruce from Smithtown. According to an RXR spokesperson, while there won’t be any televised coverage of the tree lighting like in past years, the event is scheduled to take place on the first Saturday in December, during nightfall. In-flight social networks - Have you flown Virgin America recently? Their in-flight social network lets you use your iPhones to connect with other passengers at the gate or in the air! What’s the reason for this? This system was designed with the business traveler in mind, hoping they could take advantage of some downtime in flight and make some new professional connections.

Unlocking a room - Who needs to worry about room keys anymore? Starting this week, guests at ten Starwood Hotels around the world will be able to use their smartphones as room keys. Guests can check in using the Starwood app, get their room number, hold their phones up to the door, and the device’s Bluetooth connection will activate the lockpad. The technology will be available in all 150 Aloft, Element, and W Hotels by early next year. 

A smartphone carry on - Enter the world’s first smart, connected carry on! From your smartphone, you can lock and unlock it, track its location, be notified if you are leaving it behind and find out more about your travel habits with data tracking. Plus, you can charge your phone or other devices several times with the build in battery charger - boom. Drowsy Driving Prevention Week

Annually following daylight savings time, the National Sleep Foundation declares the first week of November to be Drowsy Driving Prevention Week. In an effort to reduce the number of fatigue-related crashes and to save lives, this campaign provides public education about the under-reported risks of driving while drowsy and preventative steps to improve safety on the road. 

Did you know:

• Driving drowsy is like driving with .05% blood alcohol content?
• 1 out of 10 drivers have fallen asleep at the wheel in this past year
• 1 out of 8 crashes that require hospitalization is due to drowsy driving
• 1 out of 6 deadly traffic accidents is a direct result of drowsy driving

Adults need on average between 7 and 9 hours of sleep a night, but unfortunately with all of the distractions and stresses of daily life - not everyone gets that much.
