The Dos and Don'ts of Carry-On Luggage

Ah, the joys of packing for a trip! Sure, it might seem simple to bring your necessities — but when you’re utilizing the perk of a carry-on bag, then packing might become a struggle. Of course, there are a series of regulations (rightfully so) when it comes to packing this courtesy bag — but what can and can’t you bring with you? Let us explain:

Don’t Bring Over 3.4 Ounces

One of the biggest tips we cannot stress enough is carrying liquids that are under 3.4 ounces. Indeed, if you happen to ignore this rule, then your possessions will be tossed by TSA with no questions asked.

If you do feel as if you can’t survive without a specific grooming product or cosmetic, then you will have the option to either purchase it after the security check at an airport shop, or you can wait until you arrive at your destination and purchase the item at a local convenience store for half the price.

Do Carry an Extra Bag (If Allowed)

Believe it or not, many airlines are now allowing passengers an extra carry-on bag, in addition to their overhead suitcase. Of course, it’s important to check with your specific airline — but many will allow passengers to bring either a briefcase, backpack or tote bag to store under the seat in front of them.

This is the perfect solution for those that might bring back an abundance of souvenirs or might tend to over-pack. Additionally, if you’re going for a short trip, then this will be the best solution to save a few dollars on a checked bag!

Don’t Over Pack Your Suitcase

Sure, it might seem fine when you leave your home — but if your carry-on is broader or heavier than what’s allowed, then you will be forced to check-in your carry-on bag. Of course, the simplest solution is to check a bag — but then there is always the possibility that it could cost a pretty penny if it’s rather heavy.

Do Measure and Weigh Your Bag

If you’re fearing that you’ll have to check your carry-on bag, then it’s essential to measure and weigh your bag before your flight. To do this, you’ll want to visit your airline’s website and see what dimensions they’ll allow for a carry-on bag, in addition to bag weight.

Once you acquire this information, take a tape measure and measure your bag empty, followed by weighing it empty on a standard scale. Once you pack the bag, then measure and weigh it again. This will give you peace of mind, knowing that your carry-on will be good to go!
