New York City’s Financial District in lower Manhattan is one of the more historic neighborhoods of the five boroughs. Home to Wall Street and the heart of the financial industry - it also features the 9/11 Memorial, South Street Seaport, and is the resting place to one of our Founding Fathers.

On your next trip into Manhattan, be sure to head downtown for historical sites, alfresco dining, and more!
1. Visit the 9/11 Memorial.
Free of charge and open to the public daily (from 7:30am to 9pm), honor the lives of those who were lost during the terrorist attacks of February 26, 1993 and September 11, 2001. Join a staff member on a 45 minute guided tour of the memorial, exploring the symbolism behind its design, the historical significance of the World Trade Center, and learning about what happened on 9/11. Then, purchase tickets to the 9/11 Memorial Museum which displays artifacts associated with the events of September 11th while presenting stories of loss and recovery.

2. Head to the top of the Freedom Tower.
Start your journey to One World Observatory in the Global Welcome Center, which welcomes you in 10 languages and celebrates the homelands of international visitors. Then, listen to heartfelt stories in an inspiring walk-through video montage of the men and women who built One World Trade Center. As you ride in the Sky Pod Elevator to the top, you’ll be immersed in a virtual time-lapse thanks to floor to ceiling LED technology that will show you over 500 years of NYC evolution in under 60 seconds. Once on the 100th floor, see 360 degree views and discover Manhattan, Brooklyn, and New Jersey from an entirely new perspective. Plus on Thursday nights, check out the Live and Local series featuring local talent from the ti-state area!

3. Take a look inside the Oculus.
Over 12 years in the making, the Oculus is a true spectacle for architecture fans. Housing the World Trade Center Transportation Hub, this all white bird-like structure replaces the PATH train station that was destroyed during the 9/11 terrorist attacks. Additionally, over 100 stores and restaurants reside within its 350,000 square foot Westfield mall that only just opened to the public mid August.

4. Pay tribute to Founding Father, Alexander Hamilton.
Tucked in the Financial District, you’ll also find Trinity Church and cemetery - the location of Alexander Hamilton’s grave. Hamilton was just 47 years old when he was  mortally wounded in a duel with Vice President Aaron Burr on July 11, 1804. He passed away the following day, on July 12th. The Founding Father was buried in the cemetery of Trinity Church - where he owned a pew and where five of his children were baptized. Due to the popularity of the Broadway musical, Hamilton, the grave has since seen a surge of fans coming to pay their respects.

5. Shop and dine in the South Street Seaport.
While the seaport is undergoing a huge overhaul - with Pier 17 set to open in 2017 - there are still tons of restaurants and retail shops to keep you busy! Check out Seaport Smorgasburg located within Fulton Market running daily for lunch and dinner through the fall!
