We’ve all been there - 30,000 feet in the air, aboard a plane, in a small confined area, with crying children. Whether you are the parent of that child, a passenger, or a member of the fight crew - that experience can be a nightmare.

While you can’t predict how children will react in flight, as a parent, you can at least be prepared:

1. Consider your flight time.
Some kids can sleep no matter the time of day or where they are. For others, this is where things get tricky. Keep in mind your child’s sleep preferences prior to booking a flight. If they need complete silence and darkness to sleep, a red-eye or early morning option may be better for your family.

2. Remember wheels are free.
Airlines will accept strollers as checked baggage for no extra charge. You’ll have to fold it up to get through security, but at least you can wheel it all the way to your gate. You can also use the stroller to transport carry-ons and instead let the kids release some energy prior to boarding.

3. Take advantage of early boarding.
Pre-boarding options for parents with young children used to be nearly universal, however many airlines moved away from it. Check with your airline to see if this still remains an option - this way you can have a few extra minutes to stow away your belongings and get the kids in their seats prior to the rest of the passengers taking up the aisle. Delta Air Lines and JetBlue are the most widely known for allowing parents with children age 2 or younger to pre-board flights, United reinstated this policy earlier this year, and American and Southwest also have pre-boarding options.

4. Gadgets are good.
Please, we repeat, please, don’t follow your “limited electronic use” policy while traveling. Kids get restless, easily. Since they’ll be unable to run around the airplane, it’s best to have something to distract them. Prior to departure, upload all their favorite movies, shows, and games to a tablet or smartphone. You’ll also want to make sure you have headphones that are comfortable in smaller ears.

5. Pack some surprises.
Whether it’s a coloring book, Play-Doh, magnetic Bingo, books, or mid-flight snacks, make sure your airplane goodie bag is ready to go. This way when the kids get bored of one thing, they’ll have something else to entertain them on standby!

6. Consider little ears.
Little ears are more sensitive to air pressure and noise. Give them something to snack or suck on during take off to prevent ear pain. For those traveling with infants - you may want to try mastering this technique. While we haven’t tested this viral video’s claims - many have commented saying this technique has indeed stopped their child from crying. What do you have to lose!
